The Child Dental Scheme

Children’s Dentistry & the Child Dental Scheme

Bundoora Family Dental Clinic is proud to provide children’s dentistry services in a friendly and calming environment. Whether your child has never been to the dentist before or they’re a nervous patient, our trusted children’s dentist can put their minds at ease and help make their visit an enjoyable experience rather than a stressful one. From routine check ups through to fillings and other services for children, our clinic can help. We can also treat children eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), also known as the child dental scheme.

Tips for Your Child’s First Appointment

Before your child visits the dentist for the first time (recommended between the age of 1 to 3), it’s important to prepare them for their appointment. You can do this by gradually getting them used to the idea and showing enthusiasm about it yourself. You may also like to bring your child along to one of your own dental appointments to show them that there’s nothing to be anxious about. This can also help them to become familiar with the environment and some of the different sights and sounds. It’s important not to wait for a dental emergency to occur before taking your child for their first appointment, as this could cause them to form a negative association.

Teeth Cleaning Tips for Kids

As a parent or guardian, it’s your responsibly to ensure the dental health of your child is looked after. As well as bringing your child to a dentist for regular check ups, you can help to keep your child’s teeth and gums healthy by properly cleaning their teeth for them, or showing them how to properly clean their teeth if they’re old enough to do it themselves. Your child’s dentist will be able to help with education, but here are some tips to get you started:

  1. Use the right toothbrush – Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush. An electric toothbrush is recommended, but a manual toothbrush can also be used.
  2. Choose a suitable toothpaste – For children under the age of 18 months, toothpaste isn’t necessary. For children between 18 months and six years, a low-fluoride children’s toothpaste should be used. From six years up, adult toothpaste can be used.
  3. Brush for two minutes – If your child is young, you should brush their teeth for them, spending at least 2 minutes ensuring all surfaces have been reached and thoroughly cleaned. If your child is old enough to brush their teeth themselves, it’s a good idea to supervise them to make sure they’re doing it properly.
